Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Describe the anatomy of the skull, skull base, neck viscera and it neurovasculature, face and underlying structures, orbit, oral and nasal cavity and a discussion of their basic embryology and its clinical importance.
2. Discuss the various imaging modalities for use in the head and neck. Discuss their clinical relevance and usage of the proposed studies.
3. Identify the histology and histopathology of the different organs located in the neck, including thyroid and parathyroids, and the upper respiratory system.
4. Discuss the basic microbiology and pathophysiology, presentation, evaluation, and treatment approaches of common infections of the head and neck.
5. Describe the risk factors for benign and malignant head, neck and oral tumors, recognize their presentation and histological features, and discuss their diagnostic evaluation and management principles.
6. Discuss the basic classification of hypersensitivity reactions and apply knowledge of their immunological mechanisms to illustrate the pathophysiology and clinical presentation of prototypical allergic reactions. Explain laboratory and clinical approaches for allergy diagnosis, and basic concepts and application of immunotherapeutic strategies.
7. Describe the classification, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic methods and treatment strategies of immunodeficiency diseases.
8. Define and classify common conditions: asthma, rhinitis, sinusitis, atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, anaphylaxis, food and drug reactions, and urticaria/angioedema. Describe these conditions’ typical clinical presentations, key physical findings, pathophysiology, initial treatment approaches, and referral indications.
9. Discuss physiology of the head and neck including: mastication, swallowing, phonation, salivation, laryngopharyngeal reflux and respiration, and the sensory functions of olfaction, taste, hearing and balance. Discuss common pathological conditions affecting these functions. Correlate pertinent history and physical examination findings, relevant testing available, and work-up with anatomy.
10. Work collaboratively as part of a team to develop skills in medical problem solving, critical thinking, and self-directed lifelong learning.
