The M2 course is predominantly based on the following elements:
FMP is a two year course designed to have students competent at the pre-clinical level to perform sensitive, targeted patient assessments in an empathic professional manner. Overall course objectives include the following:
1. Practice interpersonal and communication skills that result in effective information exchange with patients, patients’ families, and other health profession colleagues.
2. Exhibit behaviors that will build therapeutic and ethical relationships with patients in order to effectively communicate their health care goals, including situations involving sensitive, technically complex, or distressing information.
3. Show sensitivity and responsiveness to all patients irrespective of their cultures, ethnicity, gender, age, disabilities, and other factors that can affect health practices and decisions.
4. Show commitment to carrying out professional responsibilities.
5. Demonstrate an understanding of accountability to patients, society, and the profession through respect, compassion, and integrity in interactions with patients, patients’ families, and other health professionals.
6. Adhere to ethical principles governing patient care, even in the most sensitive and difficult settings.
7. Recognize and clarify the resources needed to manage ethical and legal issues that arise in the care of patients and prevent and resolve conflicts associated with ethical dilemmas.
8. Recall the elements of professional responsibility, informed consent, determination of decision-making capacity, truth-telling, medical futility, and confidentiality.
9. Develop strategies to analyze academic and clinical performance over the course of their professional careers as a basis for lifelong learning and continuous professional improvement.
10. Illustrate teaching methods to others.
11. Promote student emotional and physical health.
12. Determine diagnostic and therapeutic interventions based on, current scientific evidence and clinical judgment, compatible with patients’ preferences.
13. Perform history taking and physical examination.
14. Apply Evidence based Physical diagnosis in physical examination.
15. Identify cognitive biases that affect clinical reasoning in patient care.
16. Employ patient centered methods for health promotion and disease prevention methods.
17. Demonstrate understanding of the role of health disparities in care and employ strategies to maintain health equity.
18. Provide evidence of basic diagnostic reasoning skills.
19. Work as members of multi-disciplinary health care teams in providing patient-centered care
