Pulmonary is a 4 week course which will integrate structure and function of the pulmonary system with disease processes. It will provide students with fundamental understanding of normal and abnormal functions as well as disease processes of both major systems. These fundamental insights will prepare students to appreciate major diseases of these systems. This course will reinforce and advance the foundational understanding of therapeutic modalities involving these systems. Students will be introduced to diagnosis, including medical imaging and other diagnostic techniques, and treatment of diseases of the pulmonary system. Small group sessions will use clinical case study to illuminate fundamental principles of biology and therapeutics.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Describe and/or recognize the structural features of the important components of the pulmonary system and their function.
2. Describe fundamental principles of pulmonary physiology.
3. Present an overview of respiration from the atmosphere to the cell in normal and pathophysiological states.
4. Classify the major pulmonary diseases according to their corresponding pathological categories and correlate clinical symptoms and signs to these.
5. Delineate the prevalent risk factors for pulmonary diseases.
6. Describe and/or recognize the physiological adaptations to pathological processes of the major pulmonary diseases.
7. Apply knowledge of diagnostics techniques (such as thoracic imaging, pulmonary function tests, arterial blood gases) to identify and treat pulmonary diseases in clinical scenarios.
8. Apply knowledge of treatment modalities (pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic) to diseases of the pulmonary systems in clinical scenarios.
9. Appreciate the impact of diseases of the pulmonary systems on patients and their communities.
