About Me:

As a child, I always had an interest in science, figuring out how things worked, enjoyed talking to people, was outgoing and developed an interest in the human connection. Naturally, medicine seemed like it was the perfect meld of science, research, and relationships. My decision to go into oncology came very late in the course of my training during my internal medicine residency at Penn. In fact, I had fellowship applications filled out for gastroenterology! I did an outpatient elective in oncology and threw out the GI fellowship apps, and quickly applied to hem/onc programs! The overwhelming possibility of improving someone's life, whether it be through cure, delay of progressive symptoms, providing palliative care, emotionally supporting patients and their families, managing the most difficult medical issues, and furthering the field through research, is the most rewarding experience in the world. Adding to this fact is that I get to work with the most amazing people who share the similar goal of helping others. In fact, I cannot picture myself doing anything else.

About Me:

Robert Becker, MD, graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Stanford University.  He also completed a Master's of Business Administration from London Business School. He worked for many years as an engineer, product developer, and marketing consultant, conducting qualitative research on people's behaviors and needs to drive the development of new products such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging systems, consumer electronics, office furniture, and foods. He eventually returned to his interest in hard science and health by studying medicine. He received his medical degree from Thomas Jefferson University. He also completed Internal Medicine Residency at Albert Einstein Medical Center.

As someone with type 1 diabetes and thyroid disease he was attracted to endocrinology. Moreover, the importance of behavior in managing diseases like diabetes fit with his interest in how external factors can affect people's habits. He completed fellowship training in endocrinology at Cooper University Hospital and stayed on to join the Cooper faculty in 2016.

Dr. Becker is interested in all areas of endocrinology, saying that "the feedback loops appeal to my engineering mind," but he is particularly interested in prediabetes, obesity medicine, and how nutrition affects health.

Dr. Becker lives in Philadelphia with his wife, daughter, and son.  Outside of medicine, he plays soccer, snowboards (although not as often as he would like since moving to the East Coast), and reads a lot of nerdy science fiction.

About Me:

I always try to not only understand each patient’s physical problem, but also how it affects their life and what’s important to them, what their priorities are. I treat each person individually and as a whole person, so it’s only by getting this bigger picture that I feel I can best meet an individual’s needs.

Whether it’s a disease like cancer or a cosmetic concern, I strive to teach and empower patients to better understand their health. I have a very interactive communication style; I’ll explain something, ask if they understood the explanation, and get them to explain it back to me so I’m sure they got it. I speak to my patients conversationally, using plain language, and my patients often tell me they understand their health situation much better after we’ve talked. I also strive to listen as much—or more than—I speak, encouraging patients to ask questions and voice their concerns.

We also provide written materials and videos for pre- and post-op patient education. We try to approach patient education in as many ways as possible because people absorb information differently. Overall, we’ve found that this has decreased the number of phone calls we receive since patients have fewer questions. Plus, the better patients understand how to take care of a wound, for example, the better they tend to do in general.

I encourage my patients to be involved in all aspects of their care. The concept today is shared decision-making, but patients must have good health literacy in order to do that. So that’s why I emphasize teaching, and getting a sense of their priorities.

I’m generally conservative in my approach to treatment, I stay up on the latest advances and medical literature, and I’m definitely approachable and willing to discuss new things. Overall, I treat each patient as if they’re family, and wouldn’t recommend anything I wouldn’t do for myself or my own family.
