About Me:

It is truly a privilege for me to be a doctor and it is equally an honor when a patient chooses me to be their personal physician. I strongly believe that you simply cannot practice medicine successfully without building a close relationship with your patients. Every patient is unique and has different goals and ideas for their individual healthcare needs and it is crucial that I, as their physician, listen to my patients so that I understand and value those goals as well. This is crucial to an effective physician-patient relationship. In my practice, my patients and I make healthcare decisions together as partners. Their goals will become mine and we will reach them together as a team.

About Me:

Dr. Lombardi's Care Philosophy:

Vascular and Endovascular Surgery is a dynamic field that revolves around sound traditional medicine, judgment and values yet it is influenced by a surge of new technology that must be used with careful enthusiasm. A good vascular surgeon knows how to balance treatment techniques and utilize them in a manner that would be best suited for his/her own parent. I would say this embodies my philosophy best.

About Me:

My teaching philosophy expands upon the “see one, do one, teach one” idea. In the beginning stages of learning, the resident is best served by listening and observing. For example, I will explain a patient’s diagnostic workup or demonstrate a surgical technique. As the resident develops, he or she is expected to be able to answer theoretical questions and also demonstrate surgical skills under direct guidance. In the final stages of his or her formal surgical education, the resident will ask advanced theoretical questions and also be able to perform aspects of an operation independently. This is the stage in which the senior resident is able to teach junior residents and medical students.

My research philosophy is to first focus on an area of personal interest in which there are still unanswered questions. Then, a research question that can reasonably be expected to be answered in light of one’s resources should be developed. This is followed by a thorough literature review, development of the methodology, discussion of the project with mentors, and recruitment of a team that will assist in completing the project.

About Me:

Dr. Seftel and colleagues provided an update in the August 2015 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings for clinicians treating hypogonadal men, where they looked at the most recent Endocrine Society guidelines from 2010 and note where changes could be made or where evidence neither supports or denies efficacy and safety of testosterone therapy. Notably, patients with frailty and metabolic syndrome are two instances where changes are recommended. No Level 1 evidence was found to suggest that TRT is associated with CV disease.

View Dr. Seftel's presentation of the update.

Dr. Seftel is distinguished as the only urologist and sexual health expert included on the American Heart Associations writing panel that recently released the groundbreaking scientific statement Sexual Activity and Cardiovascular Disease. The 2012 statement provides recommendations for when sexual activity is safe for heart patients and encourages physicians to take the time to discuss the matter. Decreased sexual activity and function are common in patients with cardiovascular disease and often leads to depression and anxiety. The statement was approved by the American Heart Associations Science Advisory Committee and endorsed by the American Urological Association, the Society for Thoracic Surgeons, the International Society for Sexual Medicine and many other professional societies.

Dr. Seftel recently took part in a Point-Counterpoint session at the American Urological Association 2013 Annual Meeting regarding identifying cardiovascular risk in patients with erectile dysfunction. In his presentation he explained why he believes it is important for urologists to screen male patients for cardiovascular disease:

Should the Urologist Perform Cardiac Disease Screening in the Management of the Erectile Dysfunction Patient?

About Me:

I view myself as a mentor and a coach above anything else. Surgical education is not just about the technical specifics of suturing or cutting through tissue, but it is much more so how to build a safe and competent surgeon out of a trainee. This process takes time, experience, and directed mentorship. I try to identify unique aspects of every trainee, build on their strengths, and work specifically through repetition to improve their weaknesses. On our service, I expect the chief to run the service, and I will support them as they become more familiar and comfortable with thoracic issues.

My hope is to help impart a thorough knowledge of thoracic surgery on all cooper surgery trainees, which will hopefully help them in whatever specialty they choose to pursue.

Her teaching philosophy revolves around the understanding that learners take many forms.  From students to fellows, family members to patients - all members of the care team need to be incorporated in the learning process.  Making material accessible to learners of all experience levels is a difficult but rewarding task. Additionally, she is an active mentor to students, residents and fellows, and serves as the faculty advisor for the local chapter of the Association of Women Surgeons.

About Me:

What inspired you to become a cancer specialist?

As a young resident I had a patient who came in with a fungating breast cancer. Fungating cancers are when cancers break through the skin, creating a wound that can become infected and ulcerated. They generally develop when a patient ignores signs and symptoms (like a lump in the breast) and the cancer goes untreated for many months or years.

My patient’s wound was so severely infected that she was hospitalized. When I spoke with her she revealed to me that she was actually a retired nurse who had been estranged from her only daughter for many years and that she neglected to seek care because she did not want her first phone call to her daughter to be about a cancer diagnosis. That night I promised myself that I would be a breast surgeon and do everything I could so that patients do not get to an advanced stage like her.

What is your essential patient care philosophy?

Take care of patients as you would want your mother to be cared for. I always take my time to explain things to my patients and their family members because that’s how I would want my mother to be treated.

What do you hope your patients say about you to their family and friends?

That they feel confident having me not only as their surgeon, but as a partner in their cancer journey. That I explained things so they could understand and be an active participant in their own care.

What three words best describe you?

Passionate, decisive, and outspoken.
