About Me

Rezwanul Islam, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU). His research focuses on neuroinflammation, innate immunity and immunometabolism in acute and chronic neurological diseases, with an emphasis on identifying novel therapeutic targets for stroke, traumatic brain injury and other neurodegenerative disorders.

Dr. Islam earned his PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences major in Molecular Pharmacology from Tokushima University, Japan, as an Otsuka Toshimi Foundation Scholar, following Bachelor and Master of Pharmacy degrees from the University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh. He completed postdoctoral trainings at Chiba University, Louisiana State University, Florida Atlantic University and Cooper University Hospital, where he developed expertise in immunology, neuroscience, molecular pharmacology and translational research.

His work investigates how microglia and border-associated macrophages regulate inflammatory responses following central nervous system injury. Current research focuses microglial immunometabolism and innate immune mechanisms underlying subarachnoid hemorrhage, traumatic brain injury and Alzheimer's disease. Using transgenic mouse models, human 3D brain models, advanced flow cytometry, molecular imaging and single-cell approaches, his work aims to uncover disease mechanisms and translate discoveries in neuroimmunology into therapeutic strategies that improve outcomes for patients with neurological diseases.
