Providing Free Primary Care to the Underserved

Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU) believes in the importance of providing early and continuing clinical experiences for our students. One of the highlights of the CMSRU curriculum is the Ambulatory Clerkship, a three-year experience during which medical students provide high quality, free, faculty-supervised primary care services to an underserved population of patients at the Cooper Rowan Clinic.

At the Cooper Rowan Clinic, our students serve as primary care providers for about 600 patients annually who receive free access to medications, specialty services, and laboratory and imaging facilities. By engaging with our community residents, CMSRU students directly observe and analyze social conditions and qualities of individual and community environments that can potentially drive behaviors and influence health status, health maintenance, treatment, and healing. These community experiences, as well as their clinical rotations in the inpatient and outpatient settings, help our students to develop their personal approaches to healthcare delivery.
