Medical Students

All CMSRU students engage in discussions and analysis of biomedical issues that relate to patient care, medical practice, and research. By graduation, all students will have a comprehensive understanding of the four pillars of medical ethics, key aspects of medical law, and an application of ethical approaches to medical decision making.

Center faculty support students’ intellectual development with biomedical ethics through:

  • Active Learning Group (ALG) case scenarios include ethical and legal issues in addition to biomedical components.
  • Foundations of Medical Practice - Taken during the M1 year, this 2 week block is dedicated to topics in biomedical ethics and led by the Center’s faculty
  • Selective courses in Applied Medical Ethics, and Medical Ethics and Medically Related Law
  • Bioethics Concentration - Students are invited to apply for the bioethics concentration, during which they produce a Capstone project under the mentorship of faculty, and participate in ethics committee meetings
  • Capstone Projects. Center for Humanism faculty mentor students who are conducting research in biomedical ethics.
  • CMSRU Bioethics Society. This student run organization is dedicated to raising bioethics awareness within medicine, and prepares students to think through ethical issues and how to apply this knowledge in the practice of medicine.
  • Cooper Rowan Clinic Student Ethics Group: John McGeehan, MD advises this student-led initiative that addresses ethics issues that arise in the Cooper Rowan Clinic (CRC), a student-run clinic that serves more than 600 patients annually.
