Equipment

The Clinical Skills and Simulation Center is home to one of the most innovative medical simulation centers in the country. The sim center includes the latest high-fidelity human patient simulators to help students and practicing physicians gain experience in a realistic, interactive clinical environment with the newest technology available.

Sim Center technology includes Manikin simulators, partial task trainers, and virtual reality trainers. We are able to work with the faculty to identify the learning objectives and goals of their programs and help them choose the best equipment for their programs.

Manikin-based patient simulation

Manikin-based patient simulation takes immersive simulation further and allows us to recreate a realistic physical clinical environment. The computerized Manikin stands in for the patient, and a variety of equipment can be used (either real clinical equipment or computer-driven replicas) to monitor and treat the simulated patient.

The Manikin-based simulator has a computer representation of the patient and allows for simulation of virtually all actual functions of patients.  Among the functions that these Manikin-based simulators can replicate are:

  • Spontaneous breathing (and the ability to breathe for the patient with a bag or ventilator)
  • Real-time display of electronically monitored information (e.g. ECG, oxygen saturation, etc.)
  • Pulses, heart sounds, breath sounds, pupil size, pupil response to light
  • Obstruction of various parts of the airway

Not only are these created in their “normal” manifestation, but all the elements of a large variety of abnormal conditions can be created such as (the list is almost endless) myocardial infarction, severe allergic reaction/anaphylaxis, breathing difficulties, sepsis, malignant hyperthermia, severe abnormalities of glucose metabolism, etc.

The Sim Center houses:

  • over 100 task trainers, with 35-40% representing diverse populations
  • Five (5) high-fidelity Manikins,
  • Seven (7) ultrasound machines including Butterfly handheld ultrasound devices
  • Four (4) laparoscopic trainers,
  • a Mentor virtual reality trainer,
  • Four (4) Vimedix virtual ultrasound trainers,
  • All ancillary and adjunctive equipment needed, and much more.
