Scholarly Concentrations

CMSRU is pleased to offer medical students the option of participating in one of eight areas of Scholarly Concentration. Current CMSRU medical students in good academic standing are eligible, with the endorsement of their College Advisors.

The goals of the Scholarly Concentrations are as follows:

  • To explore and develop career interests, especially academic interests
  • To enhance participation in research or other scholarly activities
  • To individualize learning
  • To develop longitudinal mentoring relationships
  • To improve self-efficacy
  • To formally convey interests and skill sets to residency programs

A Scholarly Concentration will require completing a defined set of curricular and extra-curricular activities, including taking specific elective courses within the CMSRU curriculum, completing your Scholar’s Workshop Capstone Project in the field, and additional work outside of the curriculum. To be eligible, you must be in good academic standing, demonstrate the ability to take on extra work and remain successful in the MD curriculum. Participation and completion of the Scholarly Concentration will be recognized on your transcript and MSPE (the deans’ letter for residency applications).

Participation in a Scholarly Concentration is optional, requiring approximately 80-100 hours of work above and beyond the requirements of the MD degree. Scholars participate in activities throughout medical school and complete a related capstone project in their senior year.
