Professor of Biomedical Engineering
As senior associate dean for medical innovations programs, Dr. Byrne serves as CMSRU’s chief innovation officer. He leads the development and implementation of a strategic vision for medical innovation and advances programs that prepare “physician innovators” equipped to create transformative healthcare solutions.
In this role, he will also expand hands-on innovation opportunities for students, support faculty in advancing interdisciplinary scholarship, develop programs and partnerships that promote innovation and entrepreneurship, and build collaborations with industry, government, and nonprofit organizations to enhance CMSRU’s national leadership in medical innovation.
Dr. Byrne brings extensive leadership and scholarship in engineering, biomedical science, and innovation. He studied chemical and biomedical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University and earned his master’s and PhD in chemical engineering from Purdue University. He served as the founding head of Rowan University’s Department of Biomedical Engineering (2014–2022) and as founding dean of the Rowan-Virtua School of Translational Biomedical Engineering & Sciences (2022–2025). An accomplished researcher, he has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications with significant citation impact.
A leader in biomaterials engineering, ocular and controlled drug delivery, bionanomaterials, polymer engineering, and biomedical devices, Dr. Byrne has secured funding from the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, industry, and others. He also serves on national research panels and study sections across multiple federal agencies and foundations.
