CMSRU named in U.S. News' list of "10 Med Schools with the Lowest Acceptance Rates"
Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU) has earned a spot on the U.S. News and World Report “Short List” of the “10 Med Schools With the Lowest Acceptance Rates.”
CMSRU was ranked No. 10 on the list, behind esteemed programs such as University of California-Los Angeles, Mayo Clinic, Stanford, Georgetown and Brown.
While the average acceptance rate among medical schools reporting this data was 6.8 percent, the average among the 10 medical schools that admitted the smallest portion of prospective students was 2.4 percent. CMSRU only admitted 3 percent of applicants to its MD program last year.
“Our mission resonates with so many prospective students these days because they want to be educated in a humanistic environment that values inclusivity, professionalism, service, innovative teaching, research and service to the community,” says CMSRU Dean Annette C. Reboli. “During our inaugural years, we sought enrollees who matched our mission. Now, applicants seek us out because we match their mission.”
A partnership between Rowan University and The Cooper Health System, CMSRU enrolled its first students in summer 2012 in Camden, NJ. It was the first new medical school in New Jersey in more than 35 years and the only four-year, MD-granting medical school in South Jersey.
CMSRU is a proudly mission-driven school focused on developing highly skilled and socially conscious physician leaders who value a patient-centered, team approach to health care. Its innovative curriculum provides students with small-group, self-directed learning and early and continuous patient care experiences, beginning the third week of medical school. Service to the community is an important aspect of CMSRU’s program and is built into its curriculum. Every medical student is required to complete 30-40 hours of service learning annually.
CMSRU graduated its Charter Class and earned Full Accreditation from the Liaison Committee for Medical Education in 2016. Currently, 336 students are enrolled in the school. CMSRU will continue to gradually increase total enrollment to a maximum of 416 students.
