The Clinical Skills and Simulation (SIM) Center welcomes new bariatric manikin
The Clinical Skills and Simulation Center at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU) is proud to announce the addition of a new bariatric manikin. This state-of-the-art manikin will allow learners from both Cooper University Health Care (CUHC) and CMSRU to engage in essential conversations and training surrounding the care of bariatric patients. Through hands-on simulation, learners will gain a deeper understanding of the unique challenges faced by bariatric patients while reflecting on their own implicit biases.
Addressing a Growing Need in Healthcare
According to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 42% of the U.S. population meets the criteria for obesity. In Camden, the rates of chronic disease, including obesity, are consistently higher than in Camden County and the state of New Jersey. The 500 Cities Project reports that 45% of Camden adults are considered obese (BMI of 30 or higher), compared to 36% of adults countywide and 28% of adults statewide.
As healthcare workers prepare to address the needs of this growing patient population, they must acquire the skills to care for individuals affected by obesity effectively.
The Complexities of Obesity in Healthcare
Obesity is associated with a range of significant comorbidities, including:
- Diabetes
- Cardiovascular disease
- Hypertension
- Obstructive sleep apnea
- Certain types of cancer
Additionally, many medical tools and equipment are not designed with obese patients in mind, posing further challenges for healthcare providers.
By integrating the bariatric manikin into our training programs, learners will develop the specialized skills to overcome these barriers and provide compassionate, patient-centered care.
